Discussion: Making Britain’s Electricity Grid Smarter

Britain’s electricity system is undergoing a major transformation, with increasing renewable generation, rising electricity demand, electric vehicles, heat pumps and battery storage placing new demands on the existing network.

One challenge is that renewable electricity can sometimes be generated when and where the network cannot accommodate it, while other areas experience increasing pressure on network capacity.

So, how can we make better use of the electricity infrastructure we already have?

I believe one promising approach is to develop a digital twin of the UK electricity network  a continuously updated virtual representation of the physical grid that combines real-time network data, demand forecasting, renewable generation forecasts and network-condition information.

Such a system could help engineers:

  • identify congestion before it occurs;
  • optimise the use of available network capacity;
  • reduce renewable energy curtailment;
  • coordinate flexible demand, batteries and EV charging;
  • monitor transformer and network loading;
  • determine where physical reinforcement is genuinely required.

The objective should not be to replace engineers or eliminate the need for new infrastructure. Instead, it should be to combine better data, modelling and engineering decision making with targeted investment in the network.
