stats like post to reader ratio on Wiring and the Regulations forum

Now the IET  have been up and running with Wiring and the Regulations BS 7671  on the new forum software  for a bit, I see that some interesting stats are emerging - for example the number of topics vs the no of posts. This  is surprisingly constant about ten to one, on all the fora, except the 'ask the community' which it seems a question is about half as likely to get an answer, which I think  is rather sad and given the title, kind of ironic..

Then in the individual categories, the replies to views ratio, this is noticeably  higher, about 20:1 rising to more like 50:1 for some catchy titles.

Compared to the old place we did not know the number of 'views', but the average replies per topic ratio was generally higher, suggesting we have suffered a bit of a hit in discussion intensity, but maybe it is early days.
old forum

(this should open a new window and not lose this one)

Ignoring the end of days on the old forum, where it was being shut down and getting a bit shambolic with posts of 'is it still working ?', and going back a month or so from there we used to have folk kicking off typically 3-4 topics per day mid week, and 5-6 at weekends. We seem to be doing mid week at the weekend rate in the new place, suggesting more activity. On this platform we seem to be getting less of the ' I'm new here and have a funny problem ' type posts, but that sort of traffic may be happening elsewhere or maybe potential new jpiners are put off if looks like you need to be an IET member to join in, which you don't - I'm not for example.

I think the transition has broadly gone OK so far - what do others think?

  • Good morning Mike,

this new forum has a different "feel" to it compared to the old one. I do not know the reason why there are not so many novices asking how to change a light bulb or wire a plug, and that is worrying as we are all here to help and are very friendly. Do we come over as being elitist? Many of us are just ordinary working or retired electricians having a chat about electrical wiring and how to comply with B.S. 7671 "Requirements for Electrical Installations".

SO ALL ARE WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE ON HIS FORUM, NEW COMERS, APPRENTICES, SPARKS AND OTHERS, INCLUDING PLUMBERS. Please join in it will not hurt, Have fun and learn, or offer advice. We are after all just one big happy family.

    Bye,

    Z.

Personally, I log in far less to participate and I visit less often generally

There are a lot of people who don't appear to have logged in since the change - and the longer that persists, they less likely they will ever be to re vist

Technically, it's gone OK  - what was hinted at back in the old place has materialised in my opinion - the new place is not that well attended (and perhaps not actually well liked)

The old forum had (or at least ended up with) a peculiar set of hoops for newcomers to jump though - including a need for an "introduce yourself" post - am I right in thinking that the process is different under this new software? Being "grandfathered" from the old Forum I've not had to go through the process for the new Forum. Is it harder for IET non-members to join now? Or are we just less aware of newcomers because of the lack of "Hello, I'm..." posts. Or is the new forum not showing up in search engines in the same way the old one did so Joe Public is less likely to stumble upon us in the first place?

  •  Signing up is a quick form fill-out     here

finding the form as a newcomer, and getting to first post  is perhaps not obvious.

This was not supposed to be all a link, I don't know how to stop that.

The question about searches is interesting.  Certainly google finds posts in here by keyword and author, so it should start to work better once there is enough content,

It also finds plenty in the archive as well.

  • Hi all

The process for newcomers is much simpler than before. We don’t ask them to introduce themselves, just post a question in the newbie section (which only the mods and they can see) and if the mods approve it, we move it over to the relevant category. This is why you’re no longer seeing posts titled ‘I’m a newbie’ or suchlike as they’re posting more specific questions instead.

    Hope that helps?

Agreed - that feature (appending anything you type onto the end of the link) is a pain. My work-around is to type something to go after the link before pasting the link itself - e.g. type a space, cursor back one position and paste the link, then cursor forward. Anything you then type is a continuation of the space (which isn't part of the link), rather than a continuation of the link.

I sometimes have to do the same with things I paste & quote. Other formatting can be persuaded to 'give up' with a couple of [RETURN]s, but not others it seems.
