I presume the tumble dryers in the picture are examples of before rather than after the modification ? Or reading the article, maybe not.

No they are not - at least one of them is a washing machine and not a tumble drier (see the one on the left with more controls and a soap drawer). I suspect this is a stock photograph and the one on the right may not even be a whirlpool machine, but it provides the impact to the story that can only be achieved with a photograph.
