    New inland substation at Salle, Norfolk.


    Visitors can see examples of real submarine cables at The Mo Museum in Sheringham, Norfolk. They are remarkably compact. It is a very interesting museum of local history, life boats, geological sample and replicas of old shops. There is a small dedicated section to green energy and the Shoal Wind Farm with a few working models for youngsters and the inquisitive.

    For an alternative view on submarine cables, you could pop down here and watch the progress of IF2.


    One thing which interests me is that the AC/DC converter is a hop, skip, and a jump from a 132 kV substation, but in fact the connexion will be made a mile or two away to the 400 kV system.

    Assuming you mean IFA2   planning application for it here  it is an inter sting project, and also as an aside, most unusual in having a radio interference condition applied to its planning permission.

    It is however a very non-standard radio interference condition, as the levels are set using standards for small industrial apparatus, and assume the levels will fall as you move away, more or less as if the site will behave as a point source of interference. There has also been a totally redundant measurement campaign that has concluded that some interference levels are rather higher than national standards in that area already !


    Of course, being a large area with an antenna-like array of cables connected to it, I think we can expect to be able to detect it from some way off when it starts converting DC to AC, as we can detect interference on medium and short wave from many of the existing lower power links further north some miles from the sites.

    Reference to IFA2, I've no idea why they didn't extend the undersea cables to Fawley, and use the existing site of the now redundant power station, which already has 400kv links to Nursling (overhead) and Chilling (under Southampton water)

    I assume that you wouldn't want to interfere with the airfield. The big shed sits at the north-eastern corner and the cables swing round just inside the perimeter to the south-western corner.

    I take it that you mean that the big shed could have been erected at Fawley, in which case I entirely agree. Perhaps it was something to do with finding a use for the land at Daedalus?
