Connecting Multiple Bemco/Ryefield Boards

Ok I have a new build project where one Bemco/Ryefield board is not large enough to cover all apartments. 


I will need to install 3 to cover the number of outgoing ways required.


My questions is this. Given that there is one incoming bulk supply, what options are there to split it between the three? I know Lucy do an MSDB with a vertical busbar. Would the DNO accept daisy chaining these together? Or should we use a busbar chamber and tap-off to each board?


Any advice would be gratefully received.

    I have designed quite a few blocks of flats from low rise up to 2 x 40 story modular builds.


    How many flats per floor and how many floors. Anything else to be. Supplied such as gym, laundry, shops etc?

    There are 36 flats in total. Car park and entrance lobby on the ground floor, 10 flats on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. The remaining flats on the 4th floor.


    Only other things of note are a couple of EV charging points. 

  • I would cable that one, not high enough to justify a bus bar. 


    Panel board on the ground supplying landlords DB and SWAs to Ryfields on each floor. EV charging points on the landlords.

    The BNO network is un-metered and it is one of the jobs on the BNO to prevent abstraction by restricting access and locking the Ryfield boards.


    The bigger jobs I have designed using bus bars have been supplied straight from a transformer in AWAs to a panel board with MCCBs protecting SWAs to the end feed units on the bus bars. The supply to the landlords bus bar is metered.




    Im surprised the service providers allow for an unmetered supply to be taken from a panel board. I was under the impression any supply must be metered with the exception of MODE/RYEFIELD/BEMCO boards as they are sealed shut. Is there definitely not a meter at the incomer to the panel board and the apartment meters are just check meters billed by the landlord? would still form part of the BNO network it would just mean tenants wont be able to change energy supplier as the MPAN will be at the incomer.

    No metering before the panel board, or on smaller installations a Ryfield board. Just done a design for a small block of flats. Supply head to main isolator to Ryfield to supply 6 flats. and a landlords DB. No meter before Ryfield.


    Bigger installs say to 5 blocks of flats supply from transformer to panel board with MCCBs. MCCBs un-metered supply to Ryfields in each block via underground cabling. One supply for tenant's supplies then a separate  supply for landlords metered in each block. Separate primary metered supply to LSS MCCB panel in different location.

    Makes sense, suppose the BNO can always lock away the tenants panel board and restrict access. 


    Interesting seeing different IDNO approaches to these installations now the DNO's don't take ownership of rising and lateral sub-mains cabling within multi occupied buildings. Some wont let you take another primary metered supply to LSS in different location, they instead make you take the secondary supply from live side of the primary LV switchboard similar to what you would do for a sprinkler to supply the LSS, Others have no problem jointing into the primary supply before it comes into the building to provide the secondary supply via cut out which would be my preference as it remove the single point of failure at the primary intake.  


    Also, interested to understand why an IDNO uses so many fuses i.e BEMCO to series 8 cutout to fused switch. Id have thought it would be acceptable to only have the fuse to protect the 25mm SWA to each apartment within the BEMCO or worst case if a fuse is required outside of the sealed BEMCO use 1 fuse in the cut out or fused isolator.
