    • New recommendation that communal fire alarm systems should not normally be installed in purpose-built blocks of flats

Is it me or does that sound potentially controversial?

It is part 6 so already has limitations on number of stories (I'm sure that's plural of story but please correct if not!) and floor area, so what I think you may be alluding to Andy, never previously applied to this scale of construction.....

    BOD
  • So having been published April 2019, when are we supposed to comply with it?

Not sure about controversial BOD - generally there has never been a requirement for communal fire systems in purpose built blocks  as there is basically no one to respond to a communal alarm (ie no concierge capability) and the methods of construction, compartmentation etc should all be in place (ie they are purpose built).

It is true to say that a new breed of fire risk assessors are (or have been) driving this change to including communal alarms based on no real knowledge of what they are trying to achieve  - post Grenfell, the situation has now reached a frenzy of confusion

I suspect the revision to the standard is just taking the opportunity to reiterate that there has never been a requirement - ie the flats are "defend in place" if properly constructed (and maintained)
