Tough Meter Tails.

I reused some old meter tails today, cira 1980s. Wow, did they bend easily. It was a delight to use them. Why oh why are modern meter tails so difficult to bend into shape. Is the copper harder? I even heard a meter installer complaining about how he hated trying to bend modern meter tails.

P.s. Is that why modern meter tails come loose so easily in main switch terminals if we just look at them? There is no "give". They are just so rigid.

  • Yes the standards are the same for 7 strand and 19 strand on the Doncaster website, Both overall BS 6004:2012 Table 3, Conductor :     Plain Annealed Copper Class 1 or 2 to BS EN 60228

Insulation:    PVC Type TI1 to BS EN 50363-3

Sheathing:    PVC Type 6 to BS7655-4.2

No difference between the two versions.

All I can find in the Wylex consumer unit instructions is not to use Tri-Rated (which this isn't).

I don't have copies of the standards so I cant wee whether they specify the number of strands but on the basis that both comply with the specs then I cant see a valid reason for a MO refusing to connect.  Of course manufacturer testing may not have caught up.  I will ask Wylex and see what they say.
