Fire cert?

Folks,

Been asked to provide a BS 5-something cert for fire smokes installed in a house. I have added 3 or 4 more to an existing system - standard AICO domestic type - no fancy fire panels or anything.

Normally, when I do a house rewire and provide a smoke/heat alarm cct, I just give them the BS7671 cert and that's it, but this time the Fire Officer has asked for a fire cert of some description. Can you advise what cert they are referring to and where I might find one to fill in?

Basically, the property will be used as a kind of long-term B&B - Not sure if this change of use from domestic dwelling makes any difference?

When it comes to testing, once I have completed the BS7671 tests I just press the test button on each alarm at each location to ensure that it triggers all of the others. Have never been asked for any kind of cert for doing this though.

Sounds like they're referring to the certificates as per BS5839-6. You'll need to issue e.g. a fire detection and alarm system installation certificate, and a commissioning certificate, to prevent liability, e.g. so the client can prove compliance with legislation; see annexe F for model certificates.

I don't have a copy of the standard so have no access to model forms nor annexes.

That will do it. If you keep the date as 2013 it is up to you [ see another thread about new 2019 version ]. I would include in the variation that you have added to an existing system . Separately your minor works cert would just be the extra wiring to the new positions.

It's an outdated form. You can download the current form from AICO, which accounts for the D1/D2 change. Given the type of installation, does your fire risk assessment indicate use of e.g. a grade D1/LD2 system as being acceptable.

Sorry to highlight my ignorance folks but what is D1/D2 thing?

How did adding protection by fitting a few extra smokes/heats and renewing all of the heads become so complex?

Is it any wonder that folk shy away from fitting the things at all for fear of being sued?
