30 Year Old Volex Double Switched Socket Explosion.

Has anyone come across a 30 year old, or younger, Volex double 13 Amp switched socket that has shorted internally and tripped off the ring M.C.B? Black explosion evidence internally and above the socket on the wall tiles and newly melted copper inside were evident. The customer just cleaned the black wall mess and turned the M.C.B back on. It stayed on. The socket has now been replaced.

  • I am surprised that anything volex has survived for longer than 30 days at any amount of current flow never mind 30 years. Are you sure it`s volex and not a fake?
  • Does the customer believe Darwin's theories?

    Hello ebee,

yep it was a genuine Volex socket. Original and genuine. I took it apart to see what had happened and it had had an internal explosion, a L to N short. It was positioned next to a new gas boiler. The customer said that there had been a lot of drilling on the same wall when the new gas boiler was installed, and lots of dust.

There was no red brick duct inside the socket just some fine sand-like particles that looked non-conductive. Perhaps drilling vibration caused the innards to rattle about and short. Who knows? The postmortem inspection was carried out in front of the customer to satisfy him. He asked if the black exploded socket was repairable.

  • Yep. The customer is due to be hooked out of the gene pool.
  • "He asked if the black exploded socket was repairable"

    ?

Reminds me of my father in law a few years back.

" My electric blanket set on fire whilst I was in bed! can you repair it?".

"No, throw it away and buy a new one!"

I've seen that sort of result a couple of time - both seemed to be due to the socket being sprayed with some, erm, 'semi conductive liquid' ... by the customer's tom cat.
