EN60204-1:2006; +24VDC and -24VDC Wire Colours

Hello All

I have a piece of equipment that I am trying to wire up in accordance to EN60204-1:2006.

On the equipment I have AC mains (230VAC) coming in, this is then converted to +/-24VDC

According to the attached document, for AC and DC power circuits the wire colour black is used, so does this mean for my +/-24VDC, I use black for both the positive and negative?

This is strange as you would not be able to tell the difference between +24VDC and -24VDC

Could someone please clarify

Many thanks in advance

  • This is strange as you would not be able to tell the difference between +24VDC and -24VDC

I suspect they expect you to use cable markers to indicate the function of individual wires - often there being far too many distinct voltages/functions/systems to allow core colour alone to be distinctive.

  • I agree it seems odd, and therefore the standard does allow you to use other colours from the approved list if confusion may result.

you could do worse than look at this ancient post.

We also tend to use the coloured numbered sleeves examples, other sizes available  when we have to wire up mono-colour, but for us it tends to be a Def Stan Pink.

It is normal for the +/- 24VDC wiring to be the same colour.

    Is this power, or control?

As has been suggested, alpha numeric ID's are required on the wiring anyway.

As mapj1 says, you can use alternative colours, but I always recommend that clients stick to the standard and claim your presumption of conformity given by following the EN's.

  • I agree with Paul here.

The "Approved List" for BS 7671, is not the "Approved List" in BS EN 60204-1, which is different (but still follows BS EN 60445).

BS EN 60445 does permit some options in how it is implemented, which accounts for these differences.

Further, actual drawings and individual wire schedules will be non-existent for many electrical installations, but are essential (along with, as has been pointed out, wire/terminal numbers) for many machines and their controls.
  • Hello All

Many thanks for all your posts this has helped a lot.

As the +/-24V DC is for power circuits I will use the colour red for both + & - voltage as stated in "Revised July 2006 to incorporate colour code and sizing recommendations in EN60204-1"

But I will use cable identifiers to enable distinction

    Hello,

I am confused why you would select red for your DC power circuits when EN 60204-1 states that these should be black, with red being for AC control?

That is taken direct from the standard, not any guidance from another organisation.

Which document are you referring to by the way please as there is no link in your post?
  • Hello

Sorry my mistake I meant to say that I will be using black for +/- 24VDC as this was mentioned in that standards of the following thread
