2 Substations each feeding a switch panel within the same room.....

Hi

I currently work at a site that has a 400A 3ph supply from one substation (on site)

I need to install another 200A 3ph supply from a different substation (also on site)

The original substation supplies a miniform panel in a switch room

Is there a problem installing a second separate miniform panel  from the second sub into the same switch room?

  • No provided you to comply with simultaneously accessible exposed conductive parts being connected to the same earthing system (411.3.1.1).To achieve this you may need to get the suppliers consent to bond the eathing systems together. The bond would need to comply with 542.1.3.3. If you have 2 different eathing systems on the supply the supplier may not permit this so best ask before you start spending the clients cash.

You will also then have 2 sources of supply in to the same installation to comply with 514.15.1. you going to need some additional labeling.
  • How, is the second supply being metered or is it the standby generator substation? and if not; how can you be sure that the 2 source substations are on the same 11kV circuit.  Normally, there should be an interlock so that the 2 supplies are never run in parallel with an auto transfer if the main supply fails.and please do check the R<Y< B sequence with a rotascope if its 3 phase installation.

So long as they’re identified I can’t see a problem. I’ve done the same with two substations feeding one switchroom with two different voltages, 433V and 525V. Like you I used Miniform gear.
One panel was a real pain in the bum, it had been ordered for another switchroom with top entry. I had to strip it down to the bare bones and rebuild it for bottom entry

  • Many thanks for the replies....

The regs links where particular interesting.....
