The Perils Of Fitting Integral LED Downlights!

This is why I only fit conventional, GU10's with LED lamps.

Called out to look at some lights not working.

Fittings installed during 2015. KSR FRD 230 integrals.

Can I get a direct replacement nearly 4 years later?

Not a chance.

Oh, KSR are still going. They just don't do that model any more. Can't find a direct replacement anywhere.

All I get is 'discontinued item'.

The KSR replacement? Hole size different, bezel size different, every--thing different.

If it was just one light I wouldn't be too concerned, but it's a public bar and there are loads of the damned things, so to change one would mean it not matching the others, and all on public view. The 'interior designers' (cushion-throwers) would have a field day with their fen shui!

If anyone has any of this model in their stock, let me know! Finish is matt white, and I need at least 2 x off.
  • Is there any chance of reclaiming a used downlight from some lower profile part of the premises ? such as a toilet or store room perhaps, or even an alcove or small corner of the bar area. A non matching replacement should be fine in such a location.
  • If I fit them for myself I buy a extra light, if I fit them for others I advise them on have at least one spare, only issue is if they are ultra expensive.

Definitely an issue to think about, you’d expect them to last longer than 4 years though.

  • Chivers:

... you’d expect them to last longer than 4 years though.

Not if the warranty is for 3 years!

I must say that my GU10 LEDs have greatly outlasted their incandescent and CFL predecessors, but unlike in a bar, they are probably on for only an hour or two a day on average.

  • Not to mention damage to the ceiling when you try to pull them out.
