    But actually there are a depressingly large number of people who think cordless charging could be done a bit like this, without pausing for considerations of safe power density, the pathetic fraction of the total energy you intercept if you don't more or less fully enclose the transmitting source with the receiver, and indeed the peak power needed to charge anything more than a phone or a toothbrush in a short time period.

    Guiding the enrgy with metallic structures (let's call them conductors), which can have their peak energy handling at small spacings enhanced by a dielectric coating (let's call that insulation) may not be the latest sexy thing, but as a concept  for all but the lowest powers, there is a lot going for it.
