Recessed Downlight & Fire Hoods

Hi, Please help!

I am an installer and have always been led to believe fire rated recessed fittings are required in a domestic situation where there is living areas above, they are not required in a bungalow or on the top floor of a domestic house with loft above.  Is this correct or should they be installed everywhere?  We are using a lot of IGuzzini fittings where fire rating is not included and separate hoods are required.

Thank you
  • I would suggest having a look at building regs for your location, and at best practice guide 5, by electrical safety first.

  • There's also this Wiring Matters article on the subject - https://www.the50plus.co.uk/tech_support/Ceiling_downlighter_regs.pdf. It's a few years old now, so it's possible the some of the regs (building as well as electrical) might have changed slightly, but the underlying physics will still hold - and does offer an alternative view to a few points.

  • Fire hoods or fire rated lights are not generally required in a 2 storey house. There are plenty of posts on the old IET forum if you do a search. 3 storeys and more is split into fire compartments with fire doors etc, that is when they are required.   Care should still be taken to ensure that debris cannot get onto hot lamps in all cases though.
