Unknown Cable.

A customer of mine has supplied some of his own cable. It appears to be 2.5mm2 copper twin and earth. It has a grey tough oversheath, (difficult to strip) marked DESCO P. It has a bare centrally placed C.P.C. The live conductors are insulated with Brown and Black coloured insulation. No B.S. markings.


Does anyone know its origin or anything else about it please?

  • I bought and installed, what I thought was a brand new, a roll of 2.5mmm2 T&E AEI cable back in 1986-7. When tested there was a short between Neutral and CPC. which was situated half way down a plastered wall in a kitchen.

    You never know what the condition of the cable is even when its sold as new from a trade counter. I would always recommend a trade account and deal with suppliers that you have established a trustung relationship.

    Installing non standard 'European' cabling without knowing its provenance is pushing the risk factor out a little further.

    IMO

    1. Do not use

    2. If you can't resist the excitement then

    3. Low reading ohms test, adjust for length, ambient temperature. compare values with known milli-Ohms/m for correct csa and copper content

    4. Insulation Resistance test, perhaps something a little higher such as a flash test.

    Alternatively.... Pass to apprentice to strip the sheathing and insulation off and place in the scrap bin for recycling.
