Sp thermostat controlling heater with 2 phase 208v supply.

As above,I may be wiring some catering equipment for Africa comprising heating elements controlled by stats

and heat lamps fed from a 208/230v tx.Wondered if sp control of the elements is ok,or I need to use a dp contactor.

The whole panel is isolated by a dp switch.Dp mcb,s will protect each circuit. Thanks for any advice.

  • In terms of control, opening one pole is sufficient (much as you would with a 400V load, such as a stadium lamp or kiln element wired between 2 phases here.) It is no worse than neutral side switching, which is frowned on in the UK, but common half the time in those parts of Europe where the plugs are non-polarised .

However, for isolation devices for repair/maintenance and in terms of ADS, both phases should be interrupted, and sounds like they are going to be.

Equally, depending which bit of Africa, the gap between UK standard and the local's may require you to re-calibrate your shock sensors anyway.
