Have you ever seen/used an earth tag ('banjo') used with a MICC cable gland fitted into a painted enclosure (no paint removal) - similar to the SWA approach ?
now discontinued, there were pre made 20mm washers with a choice of 1.5mm or 2.5mm earth tail. Great for retrofit . Were sold in packs of ten. Tried to get some more few years back, no longer produced due to lack of demand. I suppose an SWA banjo could be a substitute, if the pot has not got an earth tail.
Remember the gland may be into an insulated enclosure or into metal where paint and varnish cannot be removed without completely dismantling everything.
