public liability insurance renewal - what !

My PL insurance is due for renewal and I have used the same broker for the last ten years, that being Simply Business and renewals have been roughly at the level of between £60 to £70 for the level of cover I was happy with.  Mostly underwritten by Ageas I am told.

As I tried to understand it, the broker has contacted me to say they have changed all their systems over to a new 'one-system' platform and can no longer offer the same policy as I've had in previous years.

Long story short, the renewal quotes have been approx. £300 upwards !   One was much cheaper [than 300] but not the same cover.

All due to a change in computer system and panel of insurers now being worked with.  Picking through the smell of it all, it was not clear as to what the reason is.  Nothing changed at my end and I just wanted the same cover.  The conversation ended with the broker saying that can transfer me to another company they work along side to take on specific cases that do not fit their new offerings/system/whatever !!  (or to me, we no longer want small remuneration policies).

Quite disappointed in the broker to be truthful, though the broker's agent tried to be understanding and helpful...but c'mon... what sort of a carry on is that.

I would be very interested to know which brokers/policies and prices folks are getting out there, please ?

Edited: cheaper than the 300 !

  • @ chris pearson - I will run some online quotes of course. I was just reflecting on the experience of 10 years of no issue and my perception of the lack of answer to 'there must be a problem somewhere' with regards to the massive difference in price from last year leading to a more reflective renewal.  It's given me a headache as some things I prefer not to be a hassle...perhaps I am just venting my spleen in appropriately given I feel sure there are good options still out there.

@ blencathra thanks for the link.

Generally, consider this subject done, as it's clear that its just me 'knee jerk' at the shocking experience when least expected. Sorry.
