SPDs

Just seen a video where the SPD company - that's the name - state that their units are fine to use with any brand of consumer unit. Reason? Because SPDs are passive components.

This was at last week's ELEX show. The guy on the Hager stand next door was not best pleased to hear it!

Indeed SPD's have no moving parts, but they can and DO dissipate heat, even in normal use (assuming they're using NTC based technology, if gas discharge, then maybe not)... but all will dissipate LARGE amounts of energy when doing their job and dissipating a surge. This would have to be taken into account in the design of the CU and other accessories (breakers, switches, contactors, timers etc.)

How they can claim they're suitable for ANY cu, i am not sure. Not surprised the Hager chap's feathers were ruffled.
