Pardon my curiosity if this question seems to be going off the point, but we are talking websites anyway.
Why does the IET domain name have a "the" in it, rather than simply "iet.org"?
I can understand this for some other organisations. For instance, the Automobile Association has the domain "theaa.com". I imagine it would have preferred to have just "aa.com", but American Airlines beat it to it.
However the domain "iet.org" does not seem to exist. Try visiting places like "iet.org", or "www.iet.org", etc., and it either diverts to the IET home page or kicks in the search engine, which finds our home page immediately.
