From memory (which is now going back 13 years) in 2007 when The IET was created as a result of the merger between the IEE and the IIE the domain name IET.org was already taken and in use by someone else and therefore we adopted TheIET.org instead. I remember a number of emails being sent to us by the owner of IET.org because their mailserver was being flooded with misaddressed emails. ?
I'm guessing that in the 13 years that have now passed the original owner has either relinquished the domain to us or has let it lapse which has enabled us to now put a redirect in place. I do notice though that by entering iet.org you get a 'domain not found' message but searching for www.iet.org will redirect you to Theiet.org so probably a question for the webmaster to look into!
