Nasty. Was it really a pylon of just a wooden pole?

  • BOD has me completely perplexed with all those brand names.

AFAIK, pylon isn't one of them.

OED: The monumental gateway to an Egyptian temple, usually formed by two truncated pyramidal towers connected by a lower section containing the gate.

Originally: a post to which wires were attached for supporting or warping the wing of an aeroplane (now historical). In later use: a pillar projecting from a wing or the fuselage to support an engine, weapon, etc.

But here's the rub (my emphasis) ...

A tall tower-like structure erected as a support for a cable, etc.; spec. (now the principal use) a lattice-work metal tower for carrying overhead electricity lines. That's the evolution of language for you. ?
