This forum

This Forum, what is it? a few posts recently reminded me of what we have here.

A collection of Electricians, Electrical Engineers, Consultants, Supply side Engineers, Inspectors. Armed to the teeth with qualifications, experience  and reasoning.

Would give Shroedinger and his cat a good run for their money - makes the chicken/egg question look simple (actually the chicken/egg question is simple but that`s another matter).

You could not get guidance like this fom any scheme or body. It is brill. You even get building regs and advice, carpentry and electronics/radio thrown in too plus a host of other subjects. And a weekend quiz too. Ohh and a few comedians and some quirky quips.

To sum it up. Sheer Brilliance

The banner does not fully capture the breadth, perhaps implying exclusivity to just  'electricians' which means different things to different people ,  and just BS7671 , nor is it made very clear that anyone can raise a query, and they do not have to an IET member to join in.

    Good point Mike.

Although the text was in use on and taken from the old forum in Fusetalk I guess it could be updated now and made more 'friendly' to newcomers.

I'm loathed to go down the 'Introduce yourself' route as we've learned from experience that it doesn't work for our forum and you end up with a multitude of 'Hello' or 'Newbie here' subject lines... The original need for that 'introduce yourself' process on the Fusetalk forum was purely for spam management/account approval and we have a better way of handling that in the community as a whole.

I will be talking to the Marketing lead for the IET Standards team (the team that manage the Wiring Regs etc) about providing some more marketing support for the forum as I'm not sure that they've ever promoted it outside of the existing audience?

LoL - we moved the gang from the Axe and Cleaver snug bar, to a plush new venue  - and now we need some marketing so the regulars can find their way back ?

Not guilty, your Honour - although it's a hot topic on Mumsnet (or so I'm told) ?

  • Those who like the pub analogy for the forum may appreciate this   The Village Inn - John Betjeman

which in a funny way warns of over modernizing for fear of losing the clientele.

That's assuming that they want carpets instead of spit and sawdust! ?

  • As I have passed comment before in similar discussions, when I was a kid back in the 1970’s we used to go to a country pub at Elcocks Brook and drink rough cider in a bar with a flag stone floor and a roaring fire.

The pub was refurbished and when we asked for a pint of cider a few days after it reopened we were told they didn’t sell it anymore, because it was rotting holes in the new carpet.

  • Carpets! Carpets! a pub with carpets? whatever next? serves them right. What next? Curtains? TV? New fangled ideas Huuuuh

  • Carpets! Carpets! a pub with carpets

I prefer a nice old wooden floor myself... Carpets get very sticky when they've had beer thrown all over them... ?

Usually resulting from that classic design failure of two hands and only one mouth
