This forum

This Forum, what is it? a few posts recently reminded me of what we have here.

A collection of Electricians, Electrical Engineers, Consultants, Supply side Engineers, Inspectors. Armed to the teeth with qualifications, experience  and reasoning.

Would give Shroedinger and his cat a good run for their money - makes the chicken/egg question look simple (actually the chicken/egg question is simple but that`s another matter).

You could not get guidance like this fom any scheme or body. It is brill. You even get building regs and advice, carpentry and electronics/radio thrown in too plus a host of other subjects. And a weekend quiz too. Ohh and a few comedians and some quirky quips.

To sum it up. Sheer Brilliance
  • I'm not sure the "chicken/egg" question is that simple.

Whilst it's true that eggs pre-date chickens, the answer might appear to be "egg", but every species' egg is different in terms of size and shape.

So, which came first, the Chicken, or the Hen's Egg?
  • Mr Kenyon you are not playing fair. The normal question does not include the word "hen". Now you have spoilt it Sir.

    ?

A Lizard laid an egg and a chicken hatched out if you follow Mr Darwin therefore the egg came first.
  • Putting aside for one moment questions of the origins, assuming that  we think this forum is useful and potentially  important, then we need to ensure it's continuation and  evolution. Further, perhaps, if we want to talk as if it is living, then perhaps also ideally expansion, so we need to be welcoming of new members and discussions that take it into new areas. And it is this, as well as the general help, that I think makes it what it is.
  • I am not sure about chicken and eggs and the 3 great un-answered questions such as how does the man who drives the snow plow get to work in the morning, how much does a London cab driver really earn and but how do you know the light in the fridge goes out when the door is shut ( I could probably answer that one by the use of one of my stable of clamp meters).

What I do know is this forum is a fantastic resource where you can get advice and consultancy by industry experts and all provided free by the IET . What a really don't like is when individuals come on the forum and insult the IET that to me is really bad manners in my book!
  • I was asked if I would go on a list of people to be available to clear snow on a housing association estate twenty five miles from home, that was a No! from me.

I have had customers on the phone to me in the past telling me the light doesn’t go out in their fridge when they close the door, because when they open the fridge first thing in the morning the lamp is hot despite it supposedly having been off all night, others were just imagining it.

The snow plough man walks to work. Snowflake ?

No idea how much a London cab driver earns but I can ask a neighbour of mine next time I see him as he is a London cabbie... ?

Yes the fridge light does go out. I have GoPro footage to prove it.... ?

Oh and the chicken and egg thing then it's definitely the egg as that would have borne the first mutated embryo that would then become the first chicken. ? ? ?

  • John Peckham:

... but how do you know the light in the fridge goes out when the door is shut ...

It doesn't if it's in Sabbath mode. ?

I couldn't agree more with the need to welcome new members.

Since we moved to our new home we seem to have been reduced to a small number of regular contributors. It seems unlikely now that any more of the members from the old place are going to make the move and if we don't find a way to replace them this forum will die.

Unfortunately I don't have any bright ideas myself, but thanks ebee and Mike for drawing attention to it in the hope that someone else might.

Wiring and the Regulations Forum Our electricians forum and discussions relating to electrical installation, electrical systems design, and related engineering topics including BS 7671 wiring regulations.  Visit the IET Electrical Excellence  website to find books, services and free resources to support you! "

Does not fully capture the breadth, perhaps implying exclusivity to just  'electricians' which means different things to different people ,  and just BS7671 , nor is it made very clear that anyone can raise a query, and they do not have to an IET member to join in.

In that sense  links to  'go here to create an account' and 'go here for forum help' could be nearer the top, of each public forum actually.

I do not know how many regular viewers we attract, but I do agree it feels very quiet indeed compared to 6 months ago on the old software.

we did use to have "
