STANDARD SPECIFICATION FOR PERIODIC INSPECTION AND TESTING OF ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS IN DWELLINGS

I have produced a standard specification for the periodic inspection of fixed electrical installations in dwellings.


The intention is landlords, councils, housing associations and individual home owners of potential buyers can use this to invite contractors to perform this task. Is intended also to give contractors a level playing field to tender against.


Contractors can also send it to their potential clients to fulfill their obligation to define the extent and limitations of the inspection and testing. They can then put in those 2 boxes "see attached specification".


It is a MINIMUM specification and contractors can do more if they wish.

This is not a cunning marketing exercise for my company as I am not looking for any inspection and testing work..

    I am not looking to dilute the standard but perhaps if people could feedback comments and treat the exercise as a DPC I would be most grateful.

    I can more or less guess whats in it - we each as inspectors take a view....

    Hi John, you can upload the file to a post using the paperclip symbol in the message toolbar up to 250mb , it might save you the bother of having to reply to each email manually!

    What is the view of the forum. Is the issue of a "satisfactory" EICR not that critical? What about an "Unsatisfactory" EICR how quickly should the client receive the report so that they can take action?
  • Issued (not necessarily received - postal rule can apply) within five working days does not seem that unreasonable to me, although I am not an inspector and so might not fully grasp the workload.

    Surely the bulk of the work is already done though (testing) and it's just a case of inputting the results into whatever format report/certificate you issue and popping in the post/email.

    Given that this is a minimum standard spec, perhaps a little longer, but 5 working days seems good business practice.


    BS 7671 says that the report should be produced "on completion of the periodic inspection and testing ..."! 653.1


    C1 needs something in writing there and then, preferably with an acknowledgement. If it were not given then, an owner might argue that he could not take "immediate action" (model form, section K) if he had not been made aware of the need for it.


    Similarly for C2, the report should be submitted sufficiently quickly for "urgent" action to be taken; or FI to be taken "without delay".


  • What do you do when a client doesn't agree with your C1's and 2's and refuses to pay up.

    Four possible options

    1. walk away

    2. issue court procedings

    3. publicise the fact on as many public forums as possible

    4. send the boys in ?

    6: Tell him you're going to sell the debt to the local hard case debt collector who doesn't bother with the politeness of ringing the doorbell but announces his presence in your hall having opened the door with a chainsaw.......................Who has just come out of 15 years B&B................

  • A more polite option is to notify the customer that the report has been compiled and will be released following payment.
