Memory Lane!

Reflecting on the 43 years I have been working in the industry and all of those once familiar famous brand names, I began to wonder what happened to them - apart from globalization, but where did they end up? Who bought out who? And who just gave up and shut down completely?

Here's a few names to start the ball rolling -

Allen West, makers of contacters, motor starters and switchgear.

Ellison - motor starter, switch gear etc.

MTE LTD, contacters, isolators, switchgear etc

What happened to these companies? Where are they now?

We all know that the likes of Electrium and Schnieder pretty own everything these days - Square D, Telemechanique, Merlin Gerin et al

But whatever happened to those old faithfuls whose kit I installed and worked years ago?

Would that be the site on St leonards Way that is now GEC?

Yes indeed; as well as HV switchgear, I remember they made all sizes of power and current transformers; protection relays were also made at their adjoining site at the St. Leonards works, motors were made on another site, There were some clever guys on the St. Leonards site. I remember switchgear testing was carried nearby our office, there was some almighty bangs. That was the time when they printed a book (A4 size) as I remember on protective relays, it was a bible at the time. Reyrolle at Hebburn, Tyne and Wear also printed such a book.

English Electric had an engineers' society and they had an annual dinner. When we were in a drunken state, I well remember the animations to the singing of Swing Low Sweet Chariot "coming for to carry me home" ?
