  • I wonder how many sparks sat in that beer garden and saw the potential danger but downed their pint and left with a shrug of the shoulders adamant that it was none of their business. Perhaps it would be no bad thing if electrical installation professionals signed up to a charter similar to the one that applies in some quarters of the fire safety industry. I am a member of the institute of fire prevention officers and I have absolutely no qualms about calling attention to blocked escape routes etc. I even reported one hotel to HSE and FRS when after a three night stay they still hadn’t removed builders equipment from the emergency escape stairs.

I totally agree Lyle. I would do the same. I recently reported to the reception desk a potentially dangerous situation in a private car park behind a hotel, where ordinary indoor extension leads had been run outside for car park lighting. They were just left on the ground. One was protected by a simple plastic bag, and  other had nothing to protect it from rain and children's fingers. I shall look again when I pass by.

  • Wasn't the key thing here the abstraction? Anybody who is nicking leccy is hardly likely to comply with BS 7671!
  • I have had success reporting potentially hazardous things to business owners. (always go to the owner, they're the one worried about the insurance). Butlins had a broken wiska box... fixed within 3 hrs of reporting it to a passing gardener chap. Pubs have thanked me (never with a free pint tho!) for reporting outside lights in a dangerous condition, etc.
