Old Dark Coloured 30 Amp. M.C.B. Tripping.

Like these but in 30 Amp rating.

I had a job today which I completed, but when the house owner turned on his t.v. and computer the 30 Amp M.C.B. tripped off. I reset it but it seemed graunchy and rough. It did not seem to reliably reset and appeared to be holding just on a "knife edge". Probably not used for years and corroded inside or full of house mites.

Has anyone had one of these become oversensitive?

  • I had something similar a few years ago, a call back to a kitchen job because the obsolete MCB was tripping, I load tested it using a clamp meter and kitchen appliances and found it tripped when under loaded, so I swapped it for the MCB to the lightly loaded upstairs socket ring circuit and left having told the customer it was their problem.

I told my customer that if it keeps tripping off that I can replace the small 3 way consumer unit with a new one and new M.C.B.s, as the old one carries obsolete M.C.Bs. and I would not trust a second hand fleabay one.
