UPS system

I am reading up on UPS systems and came across a system which had both rectifier and a converter in it . My question is if a rectifier converts AC to DC and so does a converter what is the difference between the 2 devices ?

I suspect you are talking about double conversion on-line and line interactive UPS systems

basically, the cheap ones run the load off mains power direct, and change over when the power fails, the expensive ones run the load on the UPS all the time with the AC-DC DC-AC setup
