Submain in Singles - why not?

Hello there, I have a general question. I have noticed that when you have to pull new submain from the main LV panel to local DB people around me tend to prefer using multicore for this purpose. Now I have a situation in the existing building where bending radius of 4c70mm2 is quite a problem in some areas where cable is going to run through so I wanted to use singles AWA 1 core per phase. I heard from a person that he would prefer to use multicore as "he doesn't like singles run like that". And surprisingly it's not the first time I heard it from someone and every time I try to ask what is your reason behind it I always hear something very vague.

Anyone can explain me what is the main reason people are responding this way?

  • Depending where it is you may need to consider the magnetic fields generated if the 3 phases are not well interleaved, (no medical scanners nearby  ?)  but trefoils are quite effective for cancelling most of that if done methodically . Certainly it can be a useful soution to getting out of certain problems.

And we often use non-armoured  singles for temporary work too, when the cable size is such that an extension lead in 5 core would be hernia inducing to carry across the field - so from about 63 amps upwards.. Just much easier to manouvre into position.

(a 50m length of 120mm2 single  is quite enough to be honest even with a landrover to pay it out from.)
