Outside Sauna and Hot Tub, wiring / earthing configuration

Hi all,

I had a look at a job this morning, the house supply is TNC-S , 100A,  I need a setup for the following : an outside hot tub (32A) approx 38meters from main CU, an outside Sauna (3KW), approx 50 meters from main CU, and, an outside shower / changing area next to the Sauna (this would only need lighting). This layout is in the owners head at the moment!,  I was thinking for simplicity to run a sub main (SWA) out from the main house to the shower / changing area and in an appropriate area install a distribution board, and, from there, feed out to the the sauna and hot tub, I’d also have the provision from there to add any landscape lighting etc. As for the earthing configuration I was thinking of using the TNC-S from the house to earth the armor (from that end only) and have a TT installation at my distribution board. Does this sound reasonable? Any suggestions welcomed!

Cheers

Al
  • On the face of it it sounds entirely reasonable.

You'd have to be careful about keeping the TT earthing system separate (and out of reach) of anything connected to the TN one (how does the water supply arrive there for instance?) and the hot tub will probably come under section 702 which will have you some details to think about, but it certainly sounds like the start of a plan.

  • Worth having a look at this discussion and decide whether you need to allow for a grid, perhaps also for shower area if this is outdoors and on the ground: https://communities.theiet.org/discussions/viewtopic/1037/26193
  • Thanks for that, I’ll have a good look around when I’m there next to make sure I have segregation of the earthing from the house to where my TT earthing will be.
  • Thanks for the link, certainly some information on that post! I used to work as a technician on substations and have installed some pretty hefty earthing grids! ...my hope is that this outside shower building will be similar to that in a house and not on the ground as such.
