Re Power Clusters

Hi there,

Was wondering how to go about putting this together and has to whether there are better ideas.Basically trying to interconnect on different floors with one power cluster to another and at present coming into the first power cluster on the ground floor there are 5 cables each i assume of 25mm2 cables labelled (L1,L2,L3,N & E) now when these are hardwired into the first power cluster would they connect to the RCD of each of the sockets for (110v,230v and 400v) and then these goto power the breakers of the sockets. And to move onto the next Power Cluster on the first floor is a suitable sized cable then connected from the RCD of the first power cluster on the ground floor to the next power cluster on the first floor?.Please help/clarify?.Also to power up a distribution box on the ground floor for the 230v lighting circuit and the office sockets can a 16mm2 cable be hardwired from the ground floor cluster units 32A MCB for 230v socket protection for the power cluster unit.to the distribution unit contained within the office?.Please Clarify?Jimmy
  • I'd have to see the design of the Power Cluster but if there is more than one place to connect the incoming power then I would want a way of isolating the whole Power Cluster locally to make it safe to work on.

    Hi Harry,

Its the yellow unit with isolators at each socket unit is the one we are looking at using in the attachment below, look at page 10 for the italian steel industry.

  • Do they not have installation manuals?

I Thought they would have, Would you have to contact the supplier themselves for the manuals.
  • As this is clearly some sort of industrial site, the safety of your fellow workers is paramount and you could be in serious trouble if you tried to follow our advice and something went wrong.

You really do need to employ a UK trained electrician or electrical engineer..

However, looking at the Mennekes UK catalogue, it says "MENNEKES receptacle combinations are available tailor made in size and equipment to your individual specification" so you can probably have included whatever you ask for. It would certainly make sense for all the required internal connections to be done in the factory.

I would be temped to have each one come with a 5m flexible lead of a suitable size and plug and all you need to install on site is a socket in a safe location on a ring main on each floor. That way it can be installed, moved and removed easily.
  • If the job is in an Italian steelworks, then the regulatory regime, especially around earthing andRCD co-ordination will be different to what we would consider normal in the UK.

Actually a UK steelworks would not look quite the same as the rest of the UK.  In Germany I have seen this sort of thing done with SY cables  so they can be moved around easily , but that would be frowned upon here, as the cable type is not recognised by BSI,.
  • If this is a UK site, I'd contact Blakley and ask them to do the rest.

They seem to be on most UK construction sites.
