Incidentally, in my time in RN, the only interpretation that I knew of "serving" was a plate of food. Tar was long gone, but perhaps Ancient Mariner has a longer memory? ?
I cannot help with cable or rope serving, but as regards a plate of food, you may wish to compare your RN plate of food with the larder of the MN http://ancient-mariner.co.uk/public/Scale%20of%20Provisions.pdf and then compare with what the US Navy were serving. Note page 105 it must have been tough in the USN!
