SY cables

I'm just after some info on the use of SY cables (not excluding CY/YY) for installation work within the UK and the relationship to BS7671 or other harmonized standards.

Working in industry I am used to seeing SY/CY/YY cabling in my environment however now I am carrying out installation work it seems the use of these cables is discouraged due to lack of compliance.

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

If this has been covered before can you please send me the link to read up on.

As a basic example I would have thought the use of an appropriately sized SY cable tied to a cable tray used to supply power would have been a better option than a standard flex cable, am I wrong or is it expected that fixed appliances have an SWA supply?

Thanks in advance :)

  • You are not wrong. SY and CY cables are suited to motors and auxiliary circuits (controls) where VSDs are used, and typically BS EN 60204-1 is the electrical safety standard.

In electrical installations to BS 7671, we have the difficulty that there isn't a "constructional standard" for these cable types at the moment.

This is explained in section 7.9 of the IET's On-Site Guide (Page 90 in the 2018 edition).
