Surge protection

I have no spare ways in my CU and want to fit a surge protection device. I guess that something like the Hager VA4T2SDSPD or Wylex REC2SPD would do the needful, but would this replace the main isolating switch or would it be added in parallel like a workshop CU? Or can it be run with a smaller cable, say 10mm2?

The use case is a house packed with electronics including a Loxone smart home system.

Thanks
  • I have fitted a Wylex 2 with an SPD  isolator in  the tails between the meter and the consumer unit in place of the ordinary REC 2 I had. CPC very short on to the MET. Took less than an hour, easy peasy!
  • Spot on. Thanks:-)
  • John, do you have to protect the SPD with either a fuse or a MCB?

No its is internally fused. No need for a circuit break or additional fuse.
  • Also really very economically priced, and includes volt-free contacts to integrate with smart home alerting. I'm impressed by recent stuff form Wylex, including a single module RCBO with neutral disconnect, which I think is unique? And single module AFDDs. I am an old school MK addict but was drawn to Hager a couple of years back. I viewed Wylex as cheap & cheerful, but they have genuinely upped their game lately.

Not unique at all - most of the international suppliers make them as N switching seems to be the norm in France ... they just don't bother marketing them here much. A few smaller companies (Garo comes to mind for one) have had N switching RCBOs on the UK market for quite a few years now.

I was never impressed with MK consumer units and devices, but they are obsolete anyway now so you won't be fitting new MK consumer units or circuit protection.
