Can you overload a lighting circuit

My question is if you’ve got a lighting circuit and you ad addition loads to the circuit will this always trip the breaker if you add too much load on a circuit?

    Indeed that, in itself, does not bother me at all.

    But .... I have seen them plugging in all sorts into it, not a washing machine though (well not yet!)
