FORUM MEMBER PAUL SKYRME NEEDS HELP.

Dear All

Our fellow forum member Paul Skyrme contracted prostate cancer which has spread to his bones and is at the moment it has paralysed him from the navel down. He is in hospital at the moment receiving treatment.

Due to his illness and the impact on his business due to coronavirus he has little or no income for some time.

Paul is a good mate to me and I am sure many other forum members. He is my man to go to on machine safety, product standards and CE marking and I know he has given freely his expert professional advice to many others here on this forum and other places. He has given out a lot of free professional advice on this forum over many years.

He has also given his time freely as an IET volunteer going to colleges to give talks and did an excellent webinar on harmonics which at the end he gave good advice to us blokes to get tested for prostate cancer.

Fellow forum member Martyn Dueden has set up a crowd funding site here https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/martynduerden to give Paul a helping hand. I am the scrutineer for this exercise and I promise you every penny raised will be sent to Paul's wife, I have her consent to do this appeal.

I know some of you have seen a drop in your income and leading up to Christmas there are many worthy charities are looking for donations but could I ask please to make a small donation to this good cause and help out a good friend.

Could you also use your social media contacts to spread the appeal to others in the electrical world.

Many thanks JP.

  • John, thank you for letting us know. Whilst I more than welcome the contributions of female members, this is very much a blokes' forum and we are all vulnerable. When I was a lad, it was said that old men died with prostate cancer and not of it, but I have known too many colleagues and friends who have been affected, so the disease appears to have changed. I wish Paul all the best.

Paul wants everyone to know as he wants us blokes to get tested and not to avoid it as we we will do not want to get embarrassed. As the say don't die of embarrassment fellas.

  • May we also add our best wishes to Paul & his family too.

I`ve been tested, I`m slightly increased risk because my dear old dad had it.

there`s at least one other dear forum member who has it too.

Get tested everybody, it can make a might difference.

Once again Paul we are thinking about you.
  • Move to the midlands, have stroke, pop down to new doctor (who I haven't seen before) for repeat medication and a simple 'anything else I can help you with?'

Within a couple of weeks I'm being prodded, inspected, tested and scanned. Diagnosis prostrate cancer and booked in for 39 daily sessions of Microwaving  (even a car to pick me up everyday!! once they found out I was catching bus) followed by 3 years of hormorn therapy.

The worse three years of my life so far but it was caught early and now now one remote monitoring. Catch it early!! I have a friend who was not as lucky and they seems to have given him a very hard time as is had spread and still undergoing operations as well as mictrowaving. Seems depending where you are might change the outcome but I'm not complaining, Glad I moved as I would be the same as him.

All I have to do now is use all the stock I bought up with me somehow.

    Remember guys keep peeing.
  • Thanks for the info John Peckham‍. In case he wasn't already aware, can you let Paul Skyrme‍ know that as an IET Member he may be able to seek help from our benevolent fund Foothold. Please send him our best wishes. ‍
  • I see it’s at £75 off the original target of £5K and Martyn has upped the target to £12K.

    Hopefully it won’t slow down.

  • I'm very sorry to hear this!!

I too have prostate cancer, (PLUS, another type of dangerous cancer, too!!!!!!),  and I have a ton of advice to share BUT... I may be giving information to many who won't be interested?

Perhaps we should setup a 'fund' for everyone who has a dreadful illness, in the 'sparky' world, as many WILL be struggling nowadays? There are many sparks, in trouble, and I'd love to give to something like this!!!!

If anyone is interested, in what I know / have learn't, then let me know.

Best of luck to this chap, and family!!!

    Best wishes to everyone!!

    regards...

Many thanks re.Foothold. I have already discussed this with Paul and he already knew about it and I think he may have already made an approach but I will check.

    Thanks

  • There is the Electrical Industries Charity which may provide some support including financial assistance and grants.

Hi Andy, Long time no see! My fault, not on here much tese days!

Indeed, it currently stands at £5,485, it is now just over 24 hours since I launched it, last night the donations were every few minutes, phone did not stop beeping :)

Initially I did not want to put a target on it but it is a requirement.

Hopefully it will continue to rise and provide some good help for Paul & Family at this time.
