Historical enquiry.

Can anyone recomend any online source for older wiring regulations, pre war or wartime.

I appreciate that current and recent regulations are copyright, but preseumably older ones are now out of copywright ?

Or does anyone sell reprinted paper copies of the then IEE regs, pre war.
  • "I did produce an 11th Edition 1939 in a County Court case when a defence barrister questioned the validity of my evidence. "

Nice one JP, I`d loved to have been a fly on the wall to that one.
  • It appears that the University of Oxford's collection starts with the 3rd edition and is held at the Radcliffe Science Library. Link

By virtue of sitting at the top of the copyright tree, the British Library is likely to have a collection. It may be possible to get copies through your local library service.
  • The collection at the IET library (mentioned by John) is complete, at least in having all the main editions (not so sure about small updates that might have happened).  It's worth browsing if you happen to be near Savoy Place during their opening hours .. good views out to the river from a comfortable library, and it's interesting to see the development in the regulations. The picture below is just the earlier ones for the century up to 1980, after which they moved to the familiar big pages.  Note the pile at the right, which is much of the ~1920--1960 range.  I went through the lot a few years ago to check some how some details had changed.  There are also some separate sets of regulations for mines and ships.

The library is lovely with lap top hire available as well. I particularly liked the locker hire facility at Savoy Place so that you can dump your stuff and go site seeing, and the food is wonderful in the cafe.

I fully agree with your comments on the IET HQ At Savoy Place as for me it is my spiritual home. I have not been there since the Covid lockdown last March. Before then I was there around at least twice a month.

The members lounge and library are one of the benefits of membership. If you are not a member I would highly recommend you apply! 35% off IET books you can buy at Savoy Place or on line.
