Installation of a generator for a house.

Hello all,

I'm moving house, (been here for over 42 years'!!), and one of the first items on my mind is installing an electrical generator.

SO; I guess there will be contactors / switch gear etc as I would like it to be 'automatic', (OR, maybe 'manual' too), changing from incoming to the generator.

a; What would be the best type of generator to purchase? Load wise? I'm not too worried as the bigger the load the bigger the           generator would need to be as long as I could run the basics within the house.

b; What switch gear would be appropriate?

I would't fancy the idea of switching tails around on a Henley block each time I needed the generator to be in use!!

Thanks, in advance!

regards... Tom
  • I don't think you will find a sheer pin on a 5kVA unit either Mike. It would be nearly the size of a dressmaker's pin, and that would be particularly unreliable. a 10HP diesel might have a torque of 50NM available on a good day (5kgF @ 1m radius) including the stored energy in any moving parts. The sheer pin on a 40kVA unit is only about 3mm dia in the shaft. They are quite difficult to break even with a short circuit fault!

I didn't know that generators come with a heating unit fitted?

Only the large ones and can you imagine the use of a 3 kW immersion heater in the water jacket of a typical 70 kVA unit in a well ventilated room actually switching off via a thermostat set at typically 50 C?

    3 x 168 x say 18p = £90.72 a week, £4717 a year...............

Happy New Year to everyone!! Hope all goes well, too!

BTW, my daughter lives up there, Pendle Hill area, and she's snowed in, (in Fence), after moving from Nelson / Barrowford but she's a London girl. I use CEF's, and they take the mickey out of me being from that 'London' area but, I made a big mistake telling them that I was born in YORKSHIRE, duh! ?

Once again, many thanks for an amazing response towards a required generator!!

    Best of luck!!
