Caravan hook up
Former Community Member
Hi I am fitting a caravan hook up on the wall next to the dno incomer box. No wires exposed. Do I still require an earth rod. The earth bond will be prob 1 ft long inside so not exposed. I know if I fit the box away using swa then yes earth rod would be used.
Have you identified the type of earthing the property already has ?(TT, TNS TNC_S ) That has to be the first step.
The only one that means you cannot use the house earth is TNCS. Sadly, it is the most common type in any building after about 1975
If you are not sure, post a photo of the company fuse holder and where the green and yellow wires go, or decide which of the pictures here match what you have .
If it does turn out to be TNCS, then to meet the law, the caravan should not connect to the mains suppliers earth, but should be made a TT island - so L and N from the house supply via a double pole RCD and, the supply earth not used at the socket, but an electrode instead.
No need for SWA cable, could be twin and earth in conduit, or straight into the the box.
