Cast iron waste pipe.

I have a 4" cast iron waste pipe coming into the basement of a property. It appears to be coated with a woven mesh material which has then been painted. I wondered if anybody had any idea as to what the material could be. I've also come across similar on a 1/2" copper water pipe . Any help gratefully received as looking to bond the pipe subject to further investigation.

  • Or, perhaps 'pitch fibre' pipe which is a 1970s economy like strawboard that really is as bad as it sounds - running sewage through the hole in the centre of a thick roll of roofing felt would not have been much less successful. ( as this person is finding....)

However, there is a lot of it about. Buried cast iron only really works in certain soil types, in others it corrodes, hence the gas main replacement schemes.
