VSD earthing

Hi I’m abit confused as to VSD earthing. I know they carry high leakage currents but have seen invertors not being directly earthed at the chassis of the VSD as the incoming earth and out going earth are connected elsewhere in the panel is there any benefits or problems with doing this? I know in BS7671 it states about having two PE for equipment with high leakage currents just trying to understand if it related to VSDS and the chassis needing to be earthed(with two conductors/or not)

  • Probably depends on the details.


    Duplicate c.p.c.s is just one option BS 7671 allows for high protective conductor currents - If the c.p.c.s is large (≥10mm²) then duplication isn't required, or indeed for ≥4mm² if mechanically protected. All that only applies to the connections to/from equipment anyway, not to the internal wiring of equipment.


    Say you had a VSD within a larger item of equipment with a metal enclosure - it may well be that the fixing bolts provide an more than adequate connection to the enclosure - and if the enclosure is adequately earthed then there may not be any need for any extra copper.

  • There are also cases where the VSD is supplied via an isolating transformer, to limit the effect of the high protective conductor currents to the outgoing side, effectively the drive and motor, but in that case usually the incoming and outgoing PE are bonded together, and to the isolating transformer outgoing Neutral.
  • Yeah most of the VSDS are within electrical panels and the incoming and outgoing Swas Are all connected together with internal cores terminated to a din rail. So one earth run to the chassis from the earth terminal is substantial?
