S.W.A. Puzzler.

You are to use two three core S.W.A. cables connected in parallel. Same size conductors and same length. The supply from source to load is single phase. If just using the steel wire armour as the C.P.C.s how would you arrange the six live cores to use them all for the single phase supply avoiding problems?

  • One L and one N in each cable (use the spare core for an extra c.p.c if you wish), or possibly one L and two Ns (but not two Ls and one N).  Otherwise you're falling foul of the curious requirement of 521.8.1 "Where multicore cables are installed in parallel each cable shall contain one conductor of each line" (quite what the objection is to having two Ls and two Ns in a 4-core cable for single phase load evades me.).

All the same in each cable also goes against the ferrous enclosure requirements of 521.5.1/521.5.2
