  • Cheeswire method is ruf as badgers.

Knife blade resting on cpc is best but must be practised first by newbies.

A lorra those strippers are OK but it does reduce their life and they are expensive.

    Agreed!

  • Personally  I vary technique depending on the insulation material. Thin PVC line T and E can be 'cheese cuttered' reasonably safely, though I will tidy up the split end afterwards,  but some of the fire rated and LSZH type compositions are do not play well with that technique, and screened and coaxial cables are  something else. At which point a knife comes out of the box.

On deliverable equipment I have been told off for using side cutters for stripping cores, as not the approved technique, but it all got a bit comical when the 'expert' technician was then called in to demonstrate correct use of the strippers, and then ended up using the side cutters on the thin stuff anyway.

Poor knife or side cutter techniques that damage the core insulation  are  probably more dangerous than unzipping and leaving it ugly.

I have a Facom stripper. Set the length and it trims and strips in one go. Highly recommended!

Agreed. But a learned skill is the way - Sliding the knife blade keeping the razor sharp part off the cpc whilst guiding the knife slide - it takes practice but once learned is a proper skill like using a micrometer to measure (or gauge) a component.

A controlled score around the sheath to aid neat removal - also a practice-able event too - nice and neat

  • Trying to use a knife, cutting T&E, usually includes cutting one of the sheathed cables too...

The newbies aren’t allowed to have or use sharp tools.
