Does earth bond cable in floor chase need conduit?

Hi,

I need to connect my gas and water mains to earth. Gas is easy as it enters the property next to CU. The rising main for the water is on the other end of the flat. Floors are concrete, however I currently have a chase cut into the floor 80mm deep that a new gas pipe was laid into for the boiler. I want to run the earth bond for the water in this chase, as it will go all the way from rising main to CU without being visible.

Question is: do I need to put the cable in conduit? The route of the chase does a number of 45 degree turns so there is no chance the cable would ever come out again if it needed replacing. So the only reason for using conduit that I can think of is mechanical protection, but given the chase is going to be filled with ardex repair mortar the additional protection of conduit seems overkill to me.

Given the above, is there anything in the regs that means I shouldn’t just stick the cable in the chase and bury it?

Thanks,

Patrick

  • you can direct bury PVC in to plaster or cements,  or you might consider the flexible conduit  with gentle curves - really it  is only protection against the trowel as the mortar is put in, and a bit of settlement maybe.
