After a little advice please guys

Hi guys just wanted a little advice please


Visited a job and client wanted power to a summer house. Only four sockets required and a small heater will be plugged in possibly dehumidifier also.


Normally we would put a new circuit in depending on set up, or a short run maybe a spur if a light load.


Getting back to the to fuseboard is not possible. The only real option is to spur off a ring main socket and then its a 45 meter run to the summer house. I could up rate cable size. Its a TNS system with rcd protection already. It would need to be in a trench or only other option is cleated to a fence (not ideal) . How does this sound guys is a spur like this acceptable? Thank you for any advice

  • I'd suggest you run 2.5mm or 4mm SWA back from the summer house to the main building, and at the summer house have a switch fuse as a light switch.  (check voltage drop and how much wire there is already in the house)

    You could do it as a fused spur, and actually the fuse could be at either end, though the ability to isolate it from the house end when on holiday or whatever may be useful. TNS plus RCD makes it easy, no rods or earth islands.

    If the summer house is quite small, (I'm thinking 10m2 or less) then 13A total is probably enough, but it would limit the total heating power available.

    Clip to fence may be OK, it rather depends on the permanence of the fence, and what happens when it will be replaced - a brick wall would be no issue, some wobbly matchwood would be a serious concern. in between, well ? .

    You could ask if the ustomer may like to dig the trench and save themselves some money and save you some backache.. If you do that be very clear about depth and route.

    What  else is on the socket circuit ? I'd be nervous if this was already the full house ring supporting kitchen. I presume you have ruled out wiring under floor  boards, cables up to the eaves and crossing the loft and all the other ways to get a supply a bit nearer the origin. I'm also assuming house sockets are on a ring in 2.5mm, rather than a radial in either 2.5mm or 4mm , but do check that.
