Photo Cell Controlling an Emergency Light.

Is it permissible to control a maintained emergency light outside via a photo cell and a Volt free set of relay contacts, so that the L.E.D.s are off during the day and only come on when it gets dark? The intention is to extend the life of the L.E.D.s. The Volt free contacts would link the supply L to maintained L of the emergency light or disconnect it. Normal battery charging would be maintained.

  • I see no objection to this proposal.

Probably not worth the trouble, capital cost, and relay coil consumption for a single light, more worthwhile for a number.

For a very large or high risk situation, I would consider it good practice to connect alternate lights to different circuits in case of sub circuit or relay failure.
