U.K.P.N.

Lovely fellas to work with. Friendly and chatty.

They visited a job recently to provide a P.M.E. earth terminal in an old house and to upgrade the 63 Amp main fuses to 100 Amp. The house has two separate supplies and two separate single phase meters. When they arrived they ummend and ardd a bit. The house has three overhead singles entering it. Two big singles and one smaller one. The U.K.P.N. pair arrived and discussed the situation. I overheard the words "16" and "22" and aluminium. The three cables comprise: One of the larger ones is phase 1, The other larger cables is N. The smaller cable is phase 2.

Anyway we got our P.M.E. earth terminal (E.F.L.I. = 0.2 Ohms), but we only got 80 Amp fuses and new cutouts. Well that was an improvement. The pair took photos and are going to speak to a  suit in the office to see if we can get 100 Amp fuses.

Most enlightening.

  • Why is there 2 supplies? Are they both going to be Upgraded? Its all good fun innit

The house is large Kelly, and a newer part was a "Granny Annexe," so it must have had separate metering for the annexe occupant. Now the whole house is to be made into a large holiday cottage for rental. There is mention of a new 32 Amp hot tub, and although the heating is gas and oil, who knows what extras may be added over time.

  • OK thanks
  • Are there 400v phase to phase (2 out of 3) or more like 460 to 480 - a split single phase ?

The latter is common on higher loaded transformers in places with only a 2 wire HV feed.

The two U.K.P.N. men said that there were two phases, but no more details were given. Other properties have an underground supply, but to save work and to save digging up the road,  this property has a final overhead connection from a pole on the other side of the road. The pole is supplied from an underground cable running up it..
