He declared the wireless thermostat faulty and proceeded to replace it, whereupon the heating in one of the other zones sprang into life, and the broken one didn't. He realised they had replaced the wrong receiver unit, and then persuaded the financial controller that we should probably replace the other one as well as that would likely fail soon anyway.
So now 2 new wireless stats, and the original zone is still not working, so they decide the motorised valve is faulty and replace that - hurraah - the zone now works.....but the zones with the new stats are not respecting the programmer status, and come on based on the stat setting even if the zone is off on the controller. It's clearly getting towards knocking off time and they think there is some poorly understood problem deep in the system wiring that they are not sure how to figure out - so I get the phone call from the financial controller asking if I can a) take a look and b) arrange to meet the heating chap to see if we can sort it together.
I popped in and this is what I found: in the new stat bases.

Very nicely done sir - well played..........
They really should stick to the bit with the water in....
