BS 7375 - Why is this a separate Standard?

Hi all;


Long time no speak - I hope everyone is well.


I have just read BS 7375 as part of my CPD and other then some commentary on the uses and restrictions of PME and the ideas behind a Pilot Cable and Earth/PE monitoring and a couple of nice Appendices demonstrating typically site layouts - what is the point of this standard, why couldn't not of been absorbed into Chapter 7? Is there some "politicking" here (for a lack of suitable phrase) between the IET and BS and how the both co-exist?

    I was involved in BS  7375 in the 90's.  BS 7375 is, in fact, a Code of Practice.  The sub-committee I sat on also dealt with the related standard BS 4363 (which covered equipment).


    Both of these are British Standards but they are not Euro Norms (BS EN). 


    The main committee I sat on was BS EN 60947 (Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear) . I was representing the NICEIC.  This main committee somehow got the job of rewriting BS 7375 and BS 4363, and since I didn't know that much about switch panel construction, I took the opportunity to join the sub-committee.


    There are some major technical differences between BS 7671 and BS 7375.  I am not going to repeat them here - if you are remotely interested - I said a great deal about them on the old forum.


    "politicking" is a factor as BS 7671 was an IEE (now IET) creation and BS 7375 and BS 4363 were from the British Standards stable.
